Residency - Pediatrics
The mission of the USF Department of Pediatrics is to ensure an environment for the education of students and residents at all training levels through the provision of comprehensive and innovative child health care and the enhancement of these endeavors through the pursuit of excellence in scholarly activities and research. The Department of Pediatrics provides primary and tertiary care in all major subspecialties for southwest and central Florida.
In addition to clinical responsibilities, faculty members have diverse research interests in both the basic and clinical sciences, including ongoing investigations of disorders of metabolism and nutrition, endocrine abnormalities, immunology, molecular genetics, and other areas of pediatric medicine. The department offers fellowship programs in neonatology, allergy/immunology, and endocrinology.
Residents may draw upon the great variety of settings available for clinical and research work to choose electives of special interest. Thus, residents may individually design significant components of their training through the choice of electives in the hospital, outpatient, or laboratory setting.
Faculty members are strong advocates for the needs of children and families at the community, county, state, and national levels. The Department of Pediatrics is dedicated to improving care for all children and enhancing access to pediatric services. It emphasizes the whole child and the family in an effort to provide excellence in medical care, medical education and clinical research.
Continuity clinic sessions are two half-days each week during the PL-2 and PL-3 years. Additional outpatient experiences in rural areas, subspecialty clinics, underserved urban neighborhoods, and community private practices are available. The program has a rural residency track, community advocacy programs, a school health elective and provides improved support for high-risk children through our new mobile dental and medical health care program. The academic general pediatricians, along with our residents, are proud to lead regional efforts to improve children's access to health care.
The practice of medicine is undergoing rapid, dramatic and far-reaching changes. The department aims to fully prepare residents to practice medicine in the 21st century. While staying within the guidelines established by the American Council on Graduate Medical Education, the curriculum will continue to evolve in order to more fully prepare the pediatricians of the future.
The USF Residency program rotations are designed to provide the residents with a balanced inpatient and outpatient experience. The training sites include a community general hospital, a free standing children's hospital, hospital-based clinic, community centers, rural sites, as well as private practice settings. The curriculum objectives are competency-based and in compliance with the ACGME outcome project . In addition, the residency program is designed to allow enough exposure in an educational environment that fosters growth, supervised autonomy, and compliance with ACGME resident duty hour limits.
