Med-Peds Program
The Departments of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics introduced a four-year integrated residency program in 1998, and we are honored to have graduated our 4th class in 2005. Our Med-Peds program is designed to prepare the trainee to function as a general pediatrician and internist with dual board certifications. This rigorous four-year program will give the graduate enhanced flexibility in career options, including the practice of General Medicine and Pediatrics and, if desired, subspecialization in any of the pediatric or medicine subspecialties.
The program takes advantage of a variety of training venues, including a freestanding major children's hospital, a community/public hospital, a cancer hospital and a large veterans hospital. The 48-month residency alternates 2-3 month periods between medicine and pediatrics, with the intern year consisting of 16 months. Night call during this time will average every fourth night on inpatient rotations. During the remaining 32 months (corresponding to the PL-2 and PL-3 level of resident on an exclusive medicine or pediatrics track), the Med-Peds residents will function at an increasing supervisory level. Call as a senior resident averages every fifth to sixth night. The program's structure offers the resident greater continuity of patient care, experience with a variety of seasonal illnesses and more time to build peer friendships in both departments. The resident have a home in both medicine and pediatrics and are an integral member of each department.
Residents spend one half-day session per week in their Pediatric and Medicine continuity clinics. Substantial time will be spent in ambulatory block rotations, in keeping with renewed national interest in outpatient care. Both departments include a focus on community and rural health. Pediatric experience will include work in rural migrant clinics, public health department clinics, private practice offices, and community health centers in underserved areas of the inner city. Medicine rotations will include the ambulatory clinics at USF, the Veterans Hospital and Tampa General, along with rural medicine clinics and community-based private practices.
The USF Med-Peds program trains the resident to be a competent dual generalist, a pediatrician and internist embracing the highest standards of practice in caring for infants, children and adults. Residents are challenged intellectually and allowed maximum autonomy as a resident. They will enjoy the full support of an outstanding faculty with diverse experience and a commitment to teaching and mentoring. The curriculum objectives are competency-based and in compliance with the ACGME outcome project. The work environment is structured to foster educational growth, supervised autonomy, and compliance with the ACGME resident duty hour limits. The USF Med-Peds program has a separate NRMP number. Application for this program does not include or exclude candidates from applying to the straight program in Medicine or Pediatrics.
