BackgroundGary W. Litman is at the University of South Florida/All Children's Hospital Children's Research Institute in St. Petersburg. He received his B.A. (1967) and Ph.D. (1972) degrees from the University of Minnesota and formerly was the Director of the Laboratory of Molecular Genetics at the Tampa Bay Research Institute (1985-1990) and Head of the Macromolecular Biochemistry Department of the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Research Institute (1972-1985) as well as Chairman of the Biology Division of the Cornell University Graduate School of Medical Sciences (1978-1980). In 1990, he received the Ann and Andrew Hines Chair in Pediatric Research and became a professor in the Department of Pediatrics, as well as in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He also has faculty appointments in the Departments of Medical Microbiology, and Marine Sciences. Dr. Litman has authored over 250 research articles, reviews, books and book chapters and is the recipient of a ten-year MERIT award from the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Litman is a past chairman of the American Cancer Society, Advisory Committee on Institutional Research Grants and has chaired and served as a member on numerous National Institutes of Health grant review panels. Dr. Litman's research interests are in the areas of molecular genetics and gene cloning with particular emphasis on understanding how the immune system develops and the genetics of cancer.
