Personal Statement:
In addition to his title of Professor of Pediatrics, Dr. Bercu holds professorships in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics. After a seven-year stint at the NIH that included clinical, rat, and primate research in male sexual development, growth hormone regulation, and thyroid hormone resistance, Dr. Bercu joined the USF faculty. He is the recipient of numerous grants and current research focus includes the neuroendocrine regulation of growth hormone secretion. Dr. Bercu is the author of about 175 scientific publications and has served on the editorial boards of several scientific journals. Among other activities, Dr. Bercu was appointed to serve on the FDA Endocrine and Metabolic Advisory Panel, has organized and chaired numerous international symposia, has lectured extensively nationally and internationally, and was elected to serve as President of the USF College of Medicine Faculty Council. Dr. Bercu holds numerous professional memberships including the American Pediatric Society, the Society for Pediatric Research, the Endocrine Society and the Lawson Wilkins Pediatric Endocrine Society. In addition, he is a consultant to several pharmaceutical companies. Dr. Bercu sees pediatric endocrine patients in clinic, teaches, and, for the past four years, has served as Chairman of the Institutional Review Board at USF.
