Birth Defects Surveillance ProgramDepartment of Pediatrics, University of South FloridaThe Birth Defects Surveillance Program (BDSP) at the University of South Florida is part of the consortium of universities that in conjunction with the Florida Department of Health operates and maintains the Florida Birth Defects Registry (FBDR.org). The BDSP provides professional education about birth defects and folic acid, participates in epidemiological related to birth defects as directed by the Department of Health, and operates an active surveillance of selected birth defects in nine Florida counties. The BDSP is staffed by a project director, research coordinator/abstractor, bio-statistician/epidemiologist, graduate research assistant, and a clinical consultant. The BDSP works closely with the National Birth Defects Prenvention Network (NBDPN.org) and is a founding member and an executive committee member of the Florida Folic Acid Coalition (folicacidnow.net). In addition, technical expertise and support is provided to the VitaGrant Project sponsored by the March of Dimes Florida Chapter and the Florida Department of Health.
