Description of the Rotations and Clinical Material
Allergy and Asthma Clinics
Allergy and asthma clinics are located in 3 different locations:
- Specialty Clinic at All Children's Hospital where Fellows will be exposed to a variety of allergic diseases in children.
- James A. Haley VA Hospital, Tampa, FL where adult patients with allergic and immunologic diseases are treated,
- Florida Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Associates, Tampa, FL where resident-fellows will experience a allergy/immunology practice setting
These clinics are supervised by eight well-trained, board certified allergists/immunologists who have major interests and expertise in certain fields of allergy and immunology. Of course, this gives the Fellows a wide variety of experience during their training.
In these clinics, the Fellows will diagnose and manage a variety of allergic disorders to include allergic rhinitis, asthma, atopic dermatitis, urticaria and allergies to foods, drugs and insects. Various diagnostic procedures are performed routinely including skin tests, spirometry and food challenge tests. Experience with specific treatments including desensitization and immunotherapy under direct supervision are provided.
Immunology Clinic
This Specialty Clinic is held weekly at ACH. Both children and adults with immunodeficiency and autoimmune diseases are routinely referred to our service from St. Petersburg, Tampa, Pinellas and Hillsborough Counties as well as from other cities and counties throughout Florida. Further, our reputation also attracts many patients nationally and occasionally, some patients from foreign countries. Rare and uncommon diseases are frequently seen in the immunology clinics because of this wide referral base.
HIV Clinic
The HIV clinics at ACH and Tampa General Hospital are considered to be one of the largest centers for pediatric HIV infection in the Nation. We currently follow approximately 200 infected patients and provide diagnosis and management for exposed infants as well. Several basic research and clinical trials have been conducted in the HIV program at the ACH and Tampa clinics. The clinics, supervised by pediatric infectious disease and allergy/immunology specialists and Fellows, have the opportunity to participate in both state-of-the-art patient care and research in pediatric HIV infection.
Rheumatology Clinic
ACH is the only regional tertiary care center for pediatric rheumatology with both inpatient and outpatient settings. Patients followed include those with a variety of rheumatologic conditions including JRA, SLE, scleroderma, dermatomyositis and MCTD. The rheumatology team includes 3 board certified pediatric rheumatologists, a clinical nurse specialist, OT/PT, nutrition and social service. This gives Fellows an opportunity for exposure to patients with various rheumatologic and autoimmune conditions and provides trainees with the understanding of basic immunology.
Inpatient Service
The Inpatient Service provides the Fellow with a deeper understanding of diagnosis and treatment of allergic and immunological diseases in hospitalized patients. Congenital, genetically determined and acquired immunodeficiency syndromes, drug allergies, angioedema, severe eczema, anaphylaxis, autoimmune diseases and status asthmaticus are among the more frequent diseases admitted for diagnosis and treatment. Primary care physicians and specialists from other departments frequently request inpatient consultations.
