Allergy and Immunology Training Program

Didactic and Research Conferences

The program has a variety of excellent clinical and research oriented scientists. Our A/I training program also includes a substantial number of teaching conferences and frequently these conferences involve invited guest speakers. The scheduled conferences include:

1. A/I Clinic Conference - Tuesdays, 7:00 a.m.

Attendees include all Allergy/Immunology faculty members, Fellows, rotating medical students and residents as well as other physicians who are interested in allergy/immunology. Two cases related to allergic or immunologic diseases are selected for in-depth discussion on pathogenesis and clinical management aspects. Input of all faculty and trainees is sought.

2. In-hospital Teaching Rounds - Fridays, 3:00 p.m.

The purpose of this activity is:

  1. for teaching and discussion of patients on the A/I service and consulted patients with all A/I/R faculty and Fellows,
  2. to facilitate sign-out for night and weekend coverage with the Fellows and Attending.

All full-time faculty including Drs. Sleasman, Dorsey and Nickeson and Fellows participate in this activity. The in-patient Fellow is responsible for preparing the list of patients, detailed histories, and management plans.

3. Allergy/Immunology Teleconference (A/I Departments of Pediatrics/Internal Medicine) Wednesdays, 7:00 a.m.

This conference, from both departments, consists mainly of didactic, state-of-the-art seminars prepared by the faculty as well as the Fellows on various A/I/R topics. Guest lecturers are frequently invited to speak on topics related to allergy and immunology. The presentations are recorded and available on the world-wide web.

4. Immunology Reviews/Case Studies - Thursday, 12:30 p.m.

This conference is designed to provide an intense review of basic immunology for A/I fellows and rotating residents in the training program. Chapters from a leading textbook in immunology are selected, assigned, and presented by the participants in a small group discussion. All participants are required to read the selected material in advance.

5. Basic Research Conference - Thursday, 12:30 p.m. (alternates with Immunology Reviews/Case Studies)

This work-in-progress conference is directed more toward basic research in which the trainees, faculty, scientists from the Immunoparameters Laboratory and participants from other departments at ACH rotate in presenting their research projects or critical analyses of major breakthrough scientific papers.

6. Allergy/Immunology Clinical Journal Club - Fridays, 7:30 a.m.

Participation by Fellows and allergy/immunology faculty. This journal club includes two sessions per month for critical review of recent articles by A/I Fellows and two sessions per month for review of chapters from major textbooks, material from a national meeting or allergy/immunology review courses.

7. Pediatric Grand Rounds - Fridays, 12:30 p.m.

This meeting provides Continuing Medical Education for physicians through joint sponsorship between USF and ACH.

8. A/I Internal Medicine Conference - Mondays, 7:30 a.m.

This conference is held at the James A. Haley VA Medical Center, USF, Tampa, and is attended by faculty from the Allergy/Immunology Training Program and Fellows during their rotation for cross-training. Fellows actively participate in journal discussions, making presentations of review articles, and book chapters.

All Children's Hospital, a 216-bed teaching hospital, consists of more than 150 pediatric specialists and subspecialists who service over 40 medical and surgical specialty divisions providing state-of-the-art care for children. There are 72 pediatric residents in training at this time at All Children's Hospital.

Bayfront Medical Center is a 502-bed hospital, staffed by board-certified faculty physicians in Family Practice, Pediatrics or Internal Medicine, as well as other physicians who are pursuing three years of advanced training in the specialty of Family Practice. The highly rated Family Practice Residency at Bayfront is also affiliated with the USF College of Medicine.

The Allergy/Immunology Training Program in the USF Department of Internal Medicine is located at the James A. Haley Veterans Administration Medical Center in Tampa, Florida . This program, under the direction of Dr. Richard F. Lockey, has offered broad-based, accredited, 2-year fellowship training since 1976.
